FRANCE HAS FIRST GAME

The former New Zealand international, K. France, will make his. first appearance in the Rothmans National Soccer League tomorrow, for Christchurch United against Western Suburbs at English Park.

France and the team captain, P. Frost, will share the centre-back role, and the New Zealand centre-half, G. Griffiths, will move to rightback in place of G. Davis.

Davis had his appendix removed only a few hours before he was due to play for New Zealand against Jardines last Saturday. He has been recovering in Middlemore hospital and is due to return to Christchurch tomorrow morning. The inclusion of France is the only change in the United team that beat Western Suburbs, 5-2, a fortnight ago. The only other newcomer is the Technical full-back, K. Pahi, who has been included among the substitutes. The team is: D. Phillips; Griffiths, France, Frost, A. Westwood; T. Haydon, V. Pollard; B. Wilkinson, D. Watson, R. Taylor, F. Madrussan. Reserves: W. Weir, Pahi, G. Dacombe.

Top Clubs Clash

The main match of the week-end will be played at Auckland on Sunday, when the league pace-setters, Blockhouse Bay and Eastern Suburbs, meet for the second time.

In their first encounter, two weeks ago, Bay won, 2-1, to go into a one-point lead. If

it wins again tomorrow, Bay: will be hard to catch in the: race for the $4OOO first prize.! In the other national league matches, Gisborne City is at home to Mount Wellington and Stop Out will play Hungaria. The curtain-raiser to the Suburbs-United match at English Park is the Gillette Chatham Cup tie between New Brighton and Timaru City, the Canterbury and South Canterbury champions, respectively. This is one of seven first-round cup matches to be played throughout the country tomorrow.

Brighton is a strong favourite to win, and thus join the Otago v. Southland winner, Christchurch United and a Wellington national league club in the southern group for the third round on July 4. The clubs will be drawn to decide the opposition and venue.
