Mid-Canterbury Squash Title To Preston
D. R. Preston won the MidCanterbury squash rackets championship when he beat G. L. Bird (Ashburton), a former New Zealand representative, in the final at Ashburton.
After dropping the first game because of Bird's speed!’ driving. Preston played himself into the match with shots of a consistent length and finding touch with his drop shots, ended the match well on top. In the semi-finals, Preston dropped only eight points' Io the Ifl-year-old Timaru player, M. Billington. Bird had a surprisingly easy win over G, A. Davidson (Timarul, who made many errors. Other Christchurch competitors did well in their grades. Miss R. Davies beat Miss J. Cockle in the final of the wo-; men’s A grade championship, and the 16-year-old P. Salt won! the B grade Classic Plate. Results were: A Grade.—Semi-final: D. R-! Preston beat M. BilUngtoh, 9-1,1 9-4, 9-3: G. L. Birl beat G. A. Davidson. 9-0. 9-1. 9-5. Final: Preston beat Bird, 6-9, 9-5, 9-3,1 9-3. Women.—Final: Miss R. Davies beat Miss J. Cockle. 6-9, 9-2, 9-5, 9-3. B. Grade. —M, Richards beat B. Martin, 8-10, 9-6, 9-4, 3-9, 10-9, Plate Events.—A grade: W. Green beat A. Naughton. 9-6, 9-2. 4-9, 1-9, 9-6. B Classic: P. Salt beat A. Jamieson,‘9-5, 9-5,
