Appeals On Tax Cases
Messrs P. T. Mahon and E. J. Somers, Christchurch bar ; risters, will leave before the end of this month to appear before the Privy Council in appeals concerned with tax assessments. Mr Mahon will also appear before the Privy Council in another appeal hearing in October or November. Mr Mahon, with him Mr R F. Pethig, of Wellington, will represent Europa Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, and Associated Motorists Petrol Company, Ltd, the respondents in appeals by the Commissioner of Inland Re venue against decisions by j the New Zealand Court of ' Appeal in favour of the companies. The cases involve I several million dollars of tax. In a hearing set down for October, Mr Mahon will appear for the Coleridge Fin- ' ance Company, respondent, in an appeal by Batemans Television, Ltd, over assignation of debt involving about $450,000. Mr Somers will represent Owen Thomas Mangin, a Methven farmer, who is appealing against a ruling in favour of the Commissioner of Inland Revenue. The ruling is regarded as a test case involving the question of taxation of family trusts and has a wide application in principle.
