Police Remove Councillor
(N.Z. Brets Association)
OTAKI, April 22. Cr H. W. Hakaraia was last night removed by the police from the monthly meeting of the Otaki Borough Council. When ordered by the Mayor (Mr J. G. Churchill), to resume his seat Cr Hakaraia, the longest-serving council member, persistently refused. He protested that he was not satisfied with the answer given to a question about proposed works estimated to cost $22,000. After an adjournment the Mayor sought an undertaking from Cr Hakaraia that he would obey the chair in future.
A definite understanding was not given and Mr Churchill moved that Cr Hakaraia be suspended for the rest of the meeting. The motion was carried without dissent. Cr Hakaraia again refused to leave and the police were called.
