Defoliant Banned

The United States Defence Department yesterday banned further use of the herbicide 2,4,5-T defoliant in Vietnam pending further study of possible health hazards. Its move was in line with other orders issued by Government departments restricting use of the liquid weedkiller in the United States.
The Senate is inquiring] Into 2,4,5-T after tests which' showed that it caused gross birth defects in mice. It has been heavily used in Vietnam as one of two primary defoliants, mainly to control weeds and bush on land not used for farming. The Defence Department spokesman said that the Deputy Defence Secretary (Mr David Packard) ordered the ban. Last October he ordered it to be used only away from populated areas.
