Professor Honoured

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, April 16. Professor John Beaglehole, the distinguished New Zealand historian, yesterday received an honorary Doctorate of Letters at Sydney University. A world authority on Captain Cook, Professor Beaglehole received the degree at a special meeting of the university Senate in recognition of his work, particularly in relation to Pacific discovery and exploration.

Professor B. R. Williams, vice-chancellor and principal of the university, described Professor Beaglehole as “a scholar of renown and a great citizen of his country.” Professor Beaglehole has received other academic honours—the 1952 Canterbury University Condliffe Memorial Award, the Royal Geographical Society's 1957 Gill Memorial award for contributions to the biography of Captain Cook, and Melbourne University’s 1963 Ernest Scott Memorial Prize for historical publication. He has been a corresponding member of the Royal Historical Society since 1966 and became a F.R.S.N.Z. the next year.
