TRADING HOURS
Extension In Akaroa
The owner of an Akaroa general store was yesterday authorised to trade for extended hours during holiday periods. The authority was given by the Shops and Offices Exemptions Tribunal (Mr H. J. Thompson, S.M.), sitting in Christchurch.
The applicant, Eric Milroy Spurr (Mr I. J. D. Hall), will be able to open from December 15 to January 31 each year from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day (to 9 p.m. on Fridays) and similarly from Easter Thursday to the Sunday following Easter Monday, both inclusive, and also during school holidays. Mr B. Alderdice, for the Canterbury and Westland Shop Assistants' Union, objected on the ground that the whole of the Akaroa situation should be considered at one time, not individual applications.
Mr Thompson said it was clear that the holiday aspect in Akaroa was predominant and that Akaroa was entitled to liberal treatment for these periods. The tribunal' also granted exemptions in respect of two New Brighton shops which will allow them to open for hours conforming to those of other shops in the area.
The applicants were Kevin Patrick Morrison, of 58 Seaview Road, and Raymond Marshall Comfort, of 129 Seaview Road.
