"Many Cars Causing Needless Pollution*

It was possible that twothirds of the cars in New Zealand were pouring unnecessary amounts of pollut ants into the air because they were out of tune, the directoi of technical services of the Champion Spark Plug Company, Mr G. Galster of Ohio told the Symposium of the Society of Automotive Engi neers in Auckland. A misfiring engine was one of the worst causes of air pol lution: an engine which misfired only 5 per cent of the time could increase pollution three-fold, and a 10 to 20 pei cent misfire level resulted in air pollution from the vehicle being increased eighl times, Mr Galster said. Tests showed that at constant speeds there could be a 10 to 20 per cent misfire level without the driver being aware of it: his only re action was to press harder on the accelerator to maintain speed, Mr Galster said. “The average driver is a

ooor judge of his car’s loss if performance because of park-plug and ignition sys ’em deterioration. Man? ’une-ups are done only be caiise the car becomes difficul' to start or fails to start on a cold or damp morning.”

“If vehicle maintenance in this country is no better than in the United States, it can be said that two-thirds of the vehicles are emitting unnecessary amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere.” Car-owners had been encouraged to think that the engine manufacturers and oil companies had the sole responsibility for achieving clean air, and suggestions for mandatory vehicle inspection or maintenance were resisted, Mr Galster said. But in the United States some states planned to enforce emission standards as soon as adequate roadside inspection equipment was available, and others might simply require motorists to show evidence of a tune-up as part of the annual licensing procedure. Car-owners had to realise that maintenance paid off in performance, lower fuel consumption, better starting, and less pollution, Mr Galster said.
