Nothing worked better at Hastings yesterday morning than Johnny Cash, which is one of the favourites for the Hawke's Bay Cup.

Mediate was overshadowed by Bluffing in his gallop but this was not unusual because Mediate is reputed to be lazy and Bluffing is one of the best track workers about.

The course proper trestles were the proper' distance out from the rail and the going, well grassed, was perfect. The plough also offered perfect going. On the course proper Johnny Cash (T. Whittington) ran six furlongs alone in Imin 16 l-ssec, the last three in 38sec. The time was good but the horse worked very easily and this made the trial more attractive.

Master Spy (B. Kirke) ran five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the last three in 38sec. This was a splendid solo trial. Luana was brilliant in a sprint with Codeene that enable them to run three furlongs in 36sec. On the plough Bluffing (L. Carston) and Mediate (R. Marsh) ran seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec, the last three in 37 3-5 sec. Bluffing was doing better than his companion at the line. Relampago (R. Marsh) . ran six furlongs in Imin 21sec, the last three in 41sec. Chill (R. Grantham) ran pleasingly over five furlongs in Imin 4sec, the last three taking 38sec. Practice (B. Dobbs) started well behind Deep Image (R. Marsh) in a five furlong trial, but was on terms at the finish in Imin 5 4-ssec, the last three taking 39 2-ssec. This was a solid trial and one which indicated Practice would be a threat in the Hawke’s Bay Cup.
