RACING South Island Prospects At Nelson Are Good

“The Press" Special Service

NELSON. South Island prospects for a Nelson Cup victory appear particularly bright tomorrow. The northern contingent has no outstanding talent and the Southlanders, Glocca Morra and Somelight, might dominate the finish to the 11-furlong event.

Glocca Morra is selected for the Nelson Cup after her fine efforts at Blenheim. On the opening day she beat all hut the talented Every Post in the Marlborough Cup and on Monday gained a just success in the Morwenstow Handicap.

Probably the outstanding feature of her success was the manner in which she came from last at the threefurlong peg to win on the unusual Blenheim course with its sharp bends and short straights. Considering the nature of her determined

stayer’s run, she should be ideally suited to the uphill i run along the longer Richmond straight. Trained by R. J. Cochrane at Gore, Glocca Morra will again be ridden by D. R. Sanderson. Mares have not a particularly good record in the Nelson Cup. The last of that sex to win the race was Tundra, which, like Glocca Morra, hailed from Gore. Somelight has yet to run on this Nelson-Blenheim circuit He is a good stayer and after minor placings in top handicap company at Riccarton, should be nearing a winning bid. Trained by E. A. Winsloe, who also prepared Tundra, Somelight is a reliable performer. During his last campaign he won four successive races, including the’ Tapanui Handicap, The Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, the Wyndham Cup and the Invercargi 11 Cup. He wound up the sequence with Bst 101 b and has the same rating this week-end. Silver Fountain and Flower Girl, which were both placed in their two outings at Blenheim are other leading southern contenders. Both ran into trouble on the Waterlea course and should appreciate the Nelson circuit Both are fine stayers with good performances in their credentials

Arria, a three-year-old filly from Foxton appeals as the best of the North Islanders. She is not always the most reliable galloper but, in the mood, can match the best. She proved this in the onemile Jackson Stakes at Wanganui late in January by finishing less than a length from Game and Kalgoorlie in the weight-for-age mile. On the Marlborough final day, Arria was an encouraging third after being very short of room when buried on the inner in the middle stages. Gold Mint, won the Nelson Cup two years ago, and in more recent months has asserted himself as a hurdler and high-weighter. He scored stylishly in highweight class at Awapuni last week-end and must be respec-

i ted as a horse which invariably races prominently in the ' late autumn. Second Leg With only eight runners in the open sprint, the 11-fur-long Gordon’s Champion Hack Handicap has been made the second leg of the Nelson ' T.A.B. double. Country Lass (AgricolaNaumai), raced by the prominent Nelson identity, Mr A. Newman, but trained at Awapuni by N. D. Eales looks ; an interesting prospect.- A ’ recent newcomer from mai--1 den ranks, she was placed at Awapuni last Saturday 1 against the back stayers. Coraiight, which had an , impressive win over the Blenheim Hack stayers on Wed- , nesday and Cyclone, which ran into bother when fourth ; in the same event, look the , best of the southerners. 1 Selections:— Neon.
