Three N.Z. Athletes Head List Of Best Performances

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

LONDON.

New Zealanders top the list in three, Australians in 22, out of 31 track and field events in the Commonwealth Games, in ratings of this year’s best performances compiled by the “Daily Telegraph.”

The three New Zealand gold medal prospects are L. R. Mills (shot), R. D. Tait (discus) and Mrs S. M. Potts (800 metres). Such is New Zealand’s present high rating in the men’s discus that the Dominion could take all three medals, for J. Antunovich and Mills are second and third respectively, to Tait LISTED TWICE

Mrs Potts not only heads the women’s 800 metres rankings. but is also second in the 1500 metres. In these two events, Miss A. Smith (Auckland), the former one mile record-holder, is listed fourth at 800, third at 1500. Other New Zealanders with high rankings are R. Quax (1500 metres). R. M. Maddford (5000 metres), R. O. Johnson (400 metres hurdles), M. J. Nichol (hammer), R. A. Williams (decathlon), Miss D. Charteris (shot), Miss R. Poulson (shot) and Miss S. Flynn (discus).

However, the rankings may be significantly changed in some events when the athletes in the Northern Hemisphere Commonwealth countries get into peak training before the Games start on July 16. The performances listed for the British and Canadians were mostly achieved indoors. ALL-METRIC GAMES The figures in brackets after event headings in the “Daily Telegraph” rankings show existing Games records, with an asterisk indicating the figures converted from linear equivalent. This year, for the first time, the Games are all-metric.
