N.Z. Cellist To Be Soloist

The noted New Zealand cellist, Farquhar Wilkinson, will be the featured soloist with the N.Z.B.C. ’ Symphony Orchestra in its second Christchurch subscription concert next Wednesday.

With the orchestra directed by the American pianistconductor, Mr Wilkinson willplay an English work, Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E Minor. All the works chosen for this concert are British, the programme being completed by the Scapiuo Overture by Walton, and A London Symphony, by Vaughan Williams, which the composer has described as “not so much music descriptive of London as a symphony by a Londoner.”

In the first subscription concert, next, Tuesday, Christchurch audiences will again see Walter Sussklnd in the dual role of conductoppianist Mr Susskind, who first toured this country in 1967, introduced the revived tradition of conducting from the piano, a procedure that was repeated here last year by Daniel Barenboim. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, one of the few modern works suited to the conductorpianist.
