COLLAPSED TUNNEL
Rebuilding In Open (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 6. The collapsed portion of the Kaimai tunnel, where four men died on February 24, is to be replaced by a concrete structure. The tunnel would be built in the open and later buried by excavated spoil, the District Commissioner of Works (Mr R. E. Hermans) said today. Mr Hermans, who led the rescue team in the disaster, said design staff was preparing plans for the concrete tunnel and these were expected within a week or two. The structure, between 100 ft and 140 ft long, would link the portal with the undamaged tunnel section. Despite the collapse, he be iieved that construction of the $l6 million, s}-mile tunnel should be almost up to time-table. Work with concrete in the open would be much quicker than inside the tunnel.
The next stage in tunnel construction would begin in about two months, when a tunnelling machine arrived from Cleveland The machine would begin working about 1000 ft from the tunnel entrance.
