TENNIS CHALLENGES Canterbury Loses, Otago Wins

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. End of season blues showed in the Canterbury Wilding Shield tennis team yesterday when it went down to Auckland, by 10 matches to two, at the Stanley Street courts.

But there was only joy among the Otago women who won their Nunneley Casket challenge with Auckland, the holder, by one set, after matches were tied at six-all. It was Otago’s first successful challenge for the casket. The two Canterbury players who won their matches, both on Saturday, were J. Martin, who beat the New Zealand under 19 champion, P. Gunning, 8-6, 2-6, 6-4, and J. Mitchell, who defeated P. Becroft, 6-3, 6-2. Yesterday, Mitchell met P. Thomson and could not reproduce his form of the previous day, losing 3-6, 3-6. In many cases, the scores did not give a true indication of Canterbury’s standard. One instance in particular was C. G. Judge’s marathon against Becroft—a match more of endurance than skill. Judge maeje Becroft work hard for his win, taking him to three sets. However, he tired in the last two, and Becroft won, 10-12, 6-4, 6-3. Judge started well in his other singles, against Thomson, and was holding service at 6-5, but he was finally beaten, 8-6, 6-1. Results of both challenges (Auckland names first): WILDING SHIELD P. Thomson beat Judge, 8-6, 6-1; beat Mitchell. 6-3, 6-3. Gunning and Becroft beat Mitchell and Judge. 6-3, 6-2; beat Martin and Thom. 6-2. 6-1. Long and Thomson beat Martin and Thom. 6-0. 6-4: beat Mitchell and Judge, 6-4, 6-4.
