Objections To Park Motorway
Sir, —Mr Guthrey says there is no appreciable difference between the length of the proposed new section and the existing road across North Hagley Park. It is obvious from a cursory glance at a map of Christchurch that the proposed new section of road will be at least 25 per cent longer than that to be relinquished to the park. Further, if the road is to continue as a six-lane highway, including median strip, it will be more than 33 per cent wider. This means something approaching 70 per cent more land will be required for the new section than is offered in return. Is Mr Guthrey incapable of appreciating a 70 per cent increase? Does he think Salisbury Street can
carry the same volume of traffic as Bealey Avenue? If not, how does he propose to disperse traffic at the junction of Salisbury Street and Park Terrace?—Yours, etc., S. BETTS. March 21, 1970.
