Ship To Open Direct Links
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, March 20.
The new roll-on ship Wanaka will in April open up direct sea links between Auckland and Wellington and Wellington and Dunedin on a timetabled basis for the first time in many years, the Union Steam Ship Companysaid today.
The weekly round-trip would assist motor . manufacturers and other! producers to extend their markets and to speed their deliveries, the company said.
At the same time the timetable of the Tasman roll-on
ship Maheno would be altered so that it would sail direct to Sydney from Lyttelton, calling at Wellington only once on each round-trip, instead of twice as at present The company said these changes would extend transhipment services between New Zealand and Australian roll-on ports. The company also said that it was negotiating to link Adelaide and Brisbane by Aus-ralian-owned roll-on services. Steamer services between the North and South Islands would be improved by the chartering of the Holm Shipping Company’s Seaway PrinI cess for the Wellington-Lyttel-ton run, and also by the introduction of the Rangatira on that run late next year.
