PROPERTY FIRES
Concern About Increase
The rising number of property fires—69 in February compared with 29 in February last year—was very disturbing indeed, the Chief Fire Officer (Mr F. A. Hardy) reported to a meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board yesterday. Fires in the Montrose Street area which had received some publicity were under investigation, Mr Hardy said. Mr C. L. Murfitt said there were seven fires in the report which were being investigated by the police. He asked if, when someone was prosecuted, the cost of the brigade’s attendance was taken into account. Mr Hardy said it was taken into account, but reimbursement was not sought. Mr Hardy reported that there were 66 more fire calls in February this year than in February last year—2ls compared with 149. Ninety of the calls were false alarms, compared with 74 in February last year.
