Manapouri Protest Chairman ‘Alarmed’
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, March 19.
The president of the national Save Manapouri campaign (Mr R. J. Maclean) said today that he was alarmed at indications that the Manapouri Commission of Inquiry might not begin its hearing for several months.
A reported statement by a member of the commission, Sir Douglas Hutchison, said no date could be set because the Government, had not yet handed out an order of reference.
Mr Mac Lean said his committee was still awaiting an assurance from the Government that work associated with the raising of the lake would not go ahead. “The national Save Manapouri Committee urges the Government to announce that no steps will be taken to raise the lake level until the findings of the commission have been announced and presented for consideration. “If there is no such anflouncement we can only assume that the formation of the commission was purely a
delaying tactic on the Manapouri question,” said Mr MacLean.
He said he hoped that the Government would announce the terms of inquiry without delay.
