HAAST DEATH Police Seeking Two Missing Cars
Two sets of missing number-plates and two missing cars are sought by the police investigating the death of Miss Jennifer Beard, whose body was found beneath the Haast River bridge ort January 19.
Both sets of number-plates, issued for Vauxhall cars, disappeared in South Westland. One set, AK 4181, disappeared late last year or early this year. The other set, AE8351, disappeared after last July. Detective Inspector E. T. Mitten, the officer-in-charge of the Beard investigation said yesterday that the police also wanted information about a lime-green Vauxhall, made between 1952 and 1957, which two Picton residents saw on January 26 in the Picton area. The plate number was CL 2168. The plates had been taken from a car registered in Wanganui. The Vauxhall might be that which was seen about the same time in the CanvastownHavelock area. It was driven off hurriedly after its driver had called at a station for petrol.
“However, we have nothing which would substantiate any connection,” he said. The second car the police are attempting to find is a 1954 Vauxhall, registered number AR 7900. It was taken from Carlyle Street, Sydenham, early in November. It was painted teal blue. Anyone able to help in finding either car or the missing number-plates should get in touch with the nearest police station. “At present we have no particular car or person under investigation in this inquiry,” he said.
