Irrigation Approved

Farmers in the southern part of South Canterbury have given their approval for the building of an irrigation scheme in their area. In the area of the proposed Morven - Glenavy irrigation scheme to cover about 23,000 acres there was an 87 per cent poll with 58 in favour of the irrigation proposals and 10 against. At the same time a poll was also taken to determine whether an additional area of more than 4000 acres should be included in the scheme, and here in a 100 per cent poll 15 voted in favour and eight against. In both cases the required 60 per cent of valid votes were in favour, so he would declare both proposals carried, said Mr L. E. Smith, the Waimate County clerk, who was the returning officer. The cost of the scheme in the 23,000 acre district has been estimated at $1.27m.
