Rowing Titles Change Hands

(N.Z. Press Association > DUNEDIN. Three championship titles were successfully defended and three changed hands on the final day of the 1970 New Zealand rowing finals at Lake Waihola on Satur-I day. Although the wind constantly changed after a calm start to the day, followed by [ a minor electrical storm, thej programme was nol inter-} rupted. The Whakatane team main-, tained the high standard of j past champion crews when it; won the coxless pairs, lours, and eights. ,W. Veldman and W. Cole, successfully defended their; .coxless pairs title, pulling; away steadily from the field; at the 750-metre mark and! increasing their lead over| Mosman (Sydney) and Union (Christchurch) without rais-i ing their rating over 32 strokes a minute. These two Whakatane men next combined with D. Molesworth and N. Mills to take the fours, and they were joined by another quartet from Whakatane to win the eights, finishing lOsec ahead of the defending champion, Wellington. M. Watkinson and hisj brother, P. Watkinson, both of West End, dominated the sculling events. M. Watkinson had little trouble defeating his former rival, A. D. Bone (Hawke’s Bay), in-the* single sculls, and he and his brother eclipsed a 66-year-old record of 11 championship wins held since 1904 by the Ute J. McGrath, of Otago, by winning the double sculls. With Veldman and Cole not defending their coxed pairs title, the result of this race was the most open of the championship events.

West End and Mosman, held I the early lead, but at 500 i metres Hamilton forced its I way to the front and stayed r j there until the 1250-metre mark. Then the Hutt Valley ? pair, R. Joyce and R. rCollinge, both Olympic gold medallists, took charge and won comfortably, by 3sec :from D. Storey and M. Wat--Ikinson (West End).
