f.V Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Four surf patrols and a jet surf boat were the stars of the 1970 New Zealand surf life-saving championships which ended at Piha yesterday.
The patrols were the Muriwai team, which won the Allan Gardner Memorial Trophy for the third year in succession. Waikanae. of Gisborne. which retained the Nelson Shield for the fifth successive year, and Moana Rua, the women’s patrol which had the greatest success in its section of the carnival.
Finally there was the jet surf boat belonging to the Midway patrol of Gisborne which provided the spectators with a great display in the surf conditions and proved its

Surfer In Trouble A young woman competitor at the national surf life-; saving championships at Piha! today was rushed ashore by a patrolling jet boat after being trapped under Bft surf. The girl. Miss Patricia Walker, of the East End Club, Taranaki, nearly drowned. She was taking part in the final of the women’s rescue! and resuscitation event. Act-; ing as beltman, she swam out 200 yards to the marker buoy to pick up the “patient." “I got my belt line eaught; up with the marker buoy I line,” she said later. “1 got dragged under the water by| a wave and they (her! rescuers) couldn’t find the Pin.”
