Old Boys’ First Outright Win
Old Boys avenged a first-round loss to Sydenham by gaining their first outright win of the season at Sydenham Park in a game of very low scoring.
The five-wicket win was meritorious because Old Boys were without two leading batsmen, C. L. Bull and B. G. Hadlee, and the steady medium pace bowler. W. M. Duncan. Also they were behind on the first innings when play began on Saturday. Sydenham’s not out batsmen, K. Thomson and K. D. Prusas, added 26 to the overnight 17 for two wickets but after their dismissals in -quick succession the rest of the innings folded meekly. However, the figures of five wickets for 14 runs by the young left-arm medium pace bowler. S. T. Chambers, were deserved. He moved the ball awkwardly from his high arm action and left the rest to the j sketchy Sydenham batting
D. R. Hadlee and W. R Bar barel, the only other bowlers used, did everything asked of them but some untidy fielding and many extras took some of the gloss off this fight back An opening stand of 27 by G. R. Sanders and M. J. Mowat set Old Boys well on the way to the required 95 to win. Both de parted just before lunch and J. W. Calder had a short stay, but the 50 came in 68 minutes and the captain, C. J. Stevens and M. R. Spinks, both reached 20 with sound batting to see Old Boys win the match at 2.45 p.m. Stevens looked determined to succeed and Spinks played the odd cut and drive of quality I. D. Wilson took three wickets and B. J. Salt turned in a steady spell which suggested that had Sydenham scored perhaps another 50 runs, it could have won the match. Umpires. Messrs J. W.
