Motunau Race To Tawanui
Tawanui. a Matangi class motor sailer, skippered bv E Ackroyd, won the Craddock Cup for the 70-mile Motunau Island race on Saturday. Tactile Too <C. and N. Jones) took line honours. Nine A and B class keelers of the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club left Lyttelton at 10 p.m. on Friday, beating into a stiff north-easterly wind. The breeze dropped to a whisper during the night and the fleet became scattered Fantasy Three (T Rol ton) at times took the lead but Tactile Too pulled away to round the mark at Motunau Island a mile ahead of Fantasy : Three, with Crusader (B. Meads') 17 minutes behind. Melita <S. Carrick) and Prospector iR. Lloyd) were unlucky with the wind and at this stage were about five miles further back. The leaders broke out their spinnakers and the wipd soon strengthened as the northwesterly change came. Tactile Too was surging ahead and reached the heads 15 miles ahead of Fantasy Three and Crusader. Crusader had a fast ride with her big kite and was clocking 14 knots when the sail blew out. Tactile Too won the Commodores Trophy for line honours, but was unplaced in the corrected time placings. Fantasy Three sailed an outstanding race and won the R.O.R.C. division as well as second place on corrected time. Crusader came in third and retained this place on corrected time.
