16 still MISSING

Rescuers were digging at Reckingen today tor 16 people still missing after the huge avalanche two days ago, although a police officer said: “I do not think we will find anyone alive.” Thirteen bodies have ' been dug out of the snow that roared down the mountainside near dawn on Tuesday, engulfing seven houses and an army officers’ barracks. Another man died in hospital and four of the 18 survivors are still . under medical care. The driving snow and high winds which had hampered work for the first 24 hours abated yesterday, and visibility improved. In Austria about 6800 people were trapped in west Austrian ski resorts yesterday after avalanches and heavy snowfalls had blocked rpad and rail links. Regional authorities are airlifting supplies to the worst-affected areas.
