Adult Ewes To $7.80

On market trends, the Culverden ewe fair yesterday was better than expected. Whereas some fine-wool fairs have been barely up to those of last year, both two-tooths land adult ewes yesterday Showed a small improvement. j The top pens of both two- ’ tooth and adult ewes did not : reach the best prices of last year, but the average class of two-tooth off tussock met a better sale throughout. A survey of 21 pens of twotooths compared with 25 pens from the same vendors last year showed a rise of 35c, while a comparison of 18 lines of adult ewes, with 21 from the same vendors last year, showed a rise of 40c. Considering the dry conditions in plains districts of Canterbury, the sale was very satisfactory. Compared with some recent fairs, a large gallery followed the sale for most of the day, and competition was brisk, although prices remained at moderate levels. The two-tooth ewes sold well up to the better sale at Addington on Wednesday, but they looked very reasonable buying compared with the adult ewes. A dollar added to any of the ewes sold as four-year-olds yesterday would have purchased a very useful two-tooth. Most of the sheep offered were hill country haffbreds, and they came forward in very good order. The yarding was smaller than last year. It was 23,585, compared with 26,400, and consisted of 6980 two-tooth ewes, 16.400 adult ewes, and 205 ewe lambs. Compared with some recent sales, only a handful of twotooths fetched $8 or more, but it was a consistent sale, with most prices in the $7 to $8 range. The top price of the section was $9.80 for a pen of 100 from J. O. Black (Stonehaven). This was 40c less than his top price last year. One of the feature lines of the sale came from the Mount Benger Estate, of Hurunui. This vendor offered 630 excellent young ewes in three lots, and sales ranged from $8.60 to $9 for a pen average of almost $8.85. A. F. S. Rutheford (Montrose) again sent forward an attractive line of halfbreds. Numbering more than 800‘ head, they sold from $7 to $B.lO for a pen average of $B, 50c more than last year. The average class of two-tooth off tussock seemed to have a better sale than those which had come forward in bigger condition. One example was the annual line from the Glynn Wye Station (Lewis Pass). These sold from $7 to $7.50, for a pen average of $7.25, compared with an average of $6.10 last year. This rise, however, was higher than usual for this class of sheep. Adult Ewe Sale Considering feed conditions, the adult ewe sale was stronger than fairs at Hawarden and Amberley recently. While the. top prices did not match those of last year, the average level was about 40c a head better. The Mount Benger Estate topped the section with \ a line of early-shorn four-year-olds at ■ $7.80. This was 30c less than I the estate received for its top pen last year. Glynn Wye Station sold its top pen of four-year-olds at $6..85 (a rise of 75c) while its second pen fetched $6.05 (a rise of 45c), and a third pen $6.40. The estate of F. and J. NorthI cote (Whalesback, Waiau) re-

ceived $7.05 for its first cut of four-year-olds compared with $5.70 last year. Its three pens of cast-for-age ewes, numbering more than 900 head, averaged $6.40, compared with $5.55 for four pens last year. The estate of W. H. Atkinson (Mason Hill) received $6.80 for , the first cut of 120 from a pen of 200 four-year-olds—a rise of 60c—a d D. H. Grigg (Grassington), received $6.65 for a pen of 384 four-year-olds, compared A comparison of values, w
