RACING Gay Doctor Should Win Gold Cup At Dunedin

Gay Doctor, the closest of seconds when he ran against some of New Zealand’s top milers at Trentham on Wellington Cup day, should be one of the foremost contenders in the S2OOO Caltex Gold Gup at Wingatui tomorrow.

Gay Doctor has developed into one of the South Island’s most versatile open-class performers this season and the good filly, Marnie, had to run a mile in 1:351 to beat him in the Anniversary Handicap on Wellington Cup day.

In the meantime he has won at a mile and a quarter and has been placed at seven and 11 furlongs. His win was in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Midsummer Handicap. He was second to Honey Belle over seven furlongs on the second day of the Wellington Cup meeting and second to Queen’s Birthday over 11 furlongs on the first day of the Dunedin meeting on Tuesday. Donald Mac. Sliderule, Tre-’ lay, and Stranger are others with appealing credentials in a good field. Donald Mac, the second topweight with 8-13, improved a long list of placed runs with a second to the brilliant Shewetta over seven furlongs on Tuesday. The last time he raced as a miler on his home track was on December 27 when, with: 8-13, he ran Princess Mellay (7-12) to a nose in the James Hazlett Gold Cup. He failed twice as a stayer at Trentham in January, but was then given a little time to freshen, and made an encouraging fresh start over a shorter course on Tuesday. Recent Winners Sliderule practically outclassed his rivals in the Gore Cup last time out, and he should be equally capable at a mile.

Trelay will find this company more formidable than anything he has met so far, but he is a three-year-old likely to be improving with each race. Last time out he won the high-weight in a romp on the first day of the

Canterbury Jockey Club’s, summer meeting. Stranger will carry strong' Southland backing after having won six races and been placed in six others in 13 starts for Mr W. E. Hazlett He brilliantly overcame difficulties in the running for his latest win, which was in an intermediate nine-furlong event at Gore. Sprint Fancy The Provincial Handicap, of six furlongs, will give Shewetta a good opportunity to complete a sprint double for the meeting. This small Byland mare led over seven furlongs on Tuesday in a stronger field than this one. Again it will be possible to' claim an allowance for the ■ grey by putting the apprentice, M. Kennedy, up, and this season’s CJ.C. Stewards’ Handicap winner should manage to stay beyond challeng-

• ing range of all the others if she has held her form. This race is the second leg of the T.A.B. concession double. Baghdad Note and Bargain Hunter are likely to be supported with most confidence to chase Shewetta home. Fields, with form, for the : T.A.B. double:— 2.50 p.m— CALTEX COLD CUP, 82000: Im.
