West Coast Farmers Having Good Season
(From Out Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. February 26. Although there are signs of drying out in some West Coast districts, farmers there are having one of their best seasons.
As a result, the West Coast has been able to supply large quantities of hay for drought relief in other parts of the South Island. The excellence of the season is also being shown in the top prices being gained for West Coast stock at sales locally and in Canterbury. A farm advisory officer with the Department of Agriculture in Greymouth (Mr C Geddes), said yesterday that the West Coast at present han some of the best 20-month-old cattle he had seen anywhere in the country. The Grey Valley, he said, could do with two inches of rain, but the situation there did not compare with that in other parts of the country. Most fanners had enough hay and silage in store for the winter, be said. Further south, the Kokatahi-Kowhiti rang! area was also a little dry. but conditions were relatively good and farmers would
t go into the winter in an ex- » cellent position. . “Some of the older farmers ' are hard-pushed to remember ’ a better season than this exceptionally good one,” said Mr . Geddes.
