3-1 Win To Brighton In Floodlit Soccer

i New Brighton beat Christchurch City, 3-1, and Western [and Shamrock drew, 0-0, in the opening matches of the Dulux floodlight soccer tournament at Rangers Park last evening. Both matches were scrappy,' over-eager players trying tooi hard and making too many l mistakes. Nevertheless, Brighton scored three good goals to give the large crowd some satisfaction.

Brighton started well and from a free-kick near half-way, W. Robinson ran on to the chipped ball and volleyed it over the head of the City goalkeeper, A. Fleming.

Later in the first half Fleming, failed to gather a loose ball and D. Duffy touched it home. Duffy scored Brighton's third goal late in the second half with an accurate . volley from a right-wing cross by G. Storer.

Just on fulLtime City scored through a powerful drive from about 30 yards out by A. Smith, who was one of the few players to express his individuality on the match.

City was bustled in defence at critical times and its attacking bursts were usually hurried and failed through lack of numbers. Brighton had the more controlled build-up and a few times switched from defence to attack with crisp and wellplaced passes. Disciplined finishing by its forwards would have given the team a bigger win.

The goal-keeping of D. Smith [(Western' and P. Straw (Shamrock) marked the second match. They had an answer

.for all scoring opportunities [created by both sets of fori wards.

The young Shamrock team seemed to lack confidence against the robust and fasl;moving Western side. Late in the game, when both sides went I all out tor the winning goal, over-anxiousness and insufficient team-work frustrated I them.
