Refusal By Gorton
(N Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, February 26.
The Australian Prime Minister (Mr John Gorton) today flatly rejected a request by the Premiers of the six Australian states fo:- more taxation responsibilities. The Premiers wanted the Government to allow them to collect a share of their states’ own income tax, instead of being allocated funds by the Commonwealth Government. The Federal Government has been collecting national income tax on behalf of the state governments since 1942. Rejecting the Premiers’, submissions, Mr Gorton promised to give sympathetic consideration to solving their financial problems. He said that the Government had reached the conclusion that it did not believe it should vacate the incometax field, either company tax or personal income tax.
