Dickens’s Birth Remembered
The highlight of celebrations held in Christchurch recently to mark the 158th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens was a talk given by Mr C. J. Wright, who compared his impressions of America gathered in a recent visit with those Dickens described in "American Notes.” This was written by Dickens after his speaking tour of that country in 1842. Mr Wright, who lectured at Washington University, St Louis, during his visit, was the main speaker at the celebrations, organised by the Christchurch branch of the Dickens Fellowship. Among the guests welcomed by the branch president (Mrs D. N. Harland) were two former presidents now living in the North Island—Mrs N. Stouppe, of Auckland, and Mr S. D. Wilson, of Wellington.
