Bowls Champion’s Close Matches
'Neto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. The notable feature of the second round of section play in the New Zealand women's fours bowling championship yesterday was the two close calls that the five-times titleholder, Mrs S. Winstanley (Marewa, East Coast), had to survive before ending the day with both her lives intact.
After beating Mrs E. Cumming (Orewa) on an extra end, 17-16, after a split decision by the umpire had gone her way, the former champion was taken to another extra end in her second match against Mrs J. Ryan (Onehunga), before winning 22-21. Her club-mate and three times winner, Mrs M. Nicol, although not pressed as close, nevertheless had to work hard for her successes over Mrs E. Dawson (Hillsboro), 22-15, [and Mrs G. Gildon (Oneihunga), 23-19. Mrs N. Rankin (Okahu Bay), a former national singles winner, also continued on her winning way with two wins.
The final match of the day brought to an end the fine run of successes of Mrs T. Bainbridge (Rocky Nook), who, until that stage, had won 12 in a row—nine in the pairs and three in the fours. She
finally went down to Mrs .J. I Hooper (Takapuna). Thirty-nine of the 350 fours who originally started the contest, ended the day with the maximum four wins. Two more rounds will be played today.
