AUSTRALIAN MARKETS EASIER BUT STEADIER AT CLOSE

Mining stocks continued to ease on the Australian stock exchanges yesterday. A wide range of issues finished the day well below the high levels of earlier in the week.

However the market appeared to steady towards the close, and a few stocks made handy gains. Nickel leaders Poseidon. Tasminex. Carr Boyd, East Met, Mining Finance, Pine Vale, Murchison. North Deborah, Gippsland. G.M.E., Laverton, and Ravensthorpe all lost ground. Samin improved again.

There was little movement among the mining heavyweights. North 8.H.. and Great Boulder did best, but Mount Isa and North Kalgurli eased. Oil stocks were a little weaker: Magellan, Beach, and Exoil improved. Among industries. C.S.R. rose 4c to 730 c. and B.H.P was steady. Later, Walker attracted support at 500 c.
