Top Cyclists Show Championship Form

M. Litolff and B. Stockwell showed they were in top form! for the Canterbury track] cycling championships at the' week-end when they competed. In the weekly meeting ai; English Park last evening. Litolff rode a finely-judged race in the amateur open twomile group handicap. He made a strong sprint from 200 yards out to hold off P. Skilling, who also rode an excellent race, and P. Bryddn. Stockwell came home well for fourth. Litolff*s other notable success was in the three-mile bell sprints in which he beat Stockwell by five points after taking double points for winning the final lap. Stockwell began the light on a good note when he won his heat of the one-mile handicap In the fast time of Imln 38.Rsec. In the final, Stockwell came from the bunch in the final 100 yards to beat Litolff by about half a length. The winning time in the final was 2min I.3sec. The final event of the night, the open 10-mile scratch race, had a sensational aftermath when the winner, L. Paviell, was disqualified. Paviell had come through on the inside in the last 20 yards to beat Stockwell, with J. Mullan a dost third. Paviell appealed against bis disqualification but it was dismissed by the judicial commit’ tee.

The amateur 500-metre sprints produced two fine races. In the first Litolff was hard pressed to beat the Papanui junior P. Brydon tn tj.ssec, and in the second the Avon, junior champion, R. Knight, puti up an outstanding performance to come from behind to defeat the experienced D. Swanston in the excellent time of IS.lsec. In the amateur 4000-metre teams’ pursuit for juniors, the No. 1 team, J. Mullan. Paviell, C. Tabak and G. Smith, finished inside the qualifying time for the national championships They recorded sroin 12.5 sec two seconds and a half faster than the qualifying time.
