BELFAST SEWER

First Stage Begun

Work has started on the project to bring sewer reticulation to houses, shops and offices in the urban part of Belfast. The aim is to have the system open to some of the residents toward the end of next year. The Christchurch Drainage Board’s loan application for the scheme was for $500,000. The first-stage contract was let for $176,442, and the contractor, George Chaffey, Ltd, has moved on to the site.

The board’s chief engineer (Mr P. J. McWilliam) said yesterday that the work in the first contract had to be completed by Aqgust next year. Other contracts for the scheme would be let in due course.

The sewering under the present scheme was not for trade wastes, and the sewage would be treated in temporary oxidation ponds. Residents of Belfast, a riding of the Waimairi County, have been agitating fob a sewerage scheme for many years. Septic tanks and nightsoil collection have been the existing methods for domestie sewage disposal.
