DEMANDS ON WATER
Effect On Fish Gives Concern
The heavy demands on rivers and streams in the province for agricultural purposes was a growing problem, the chairman of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society’s fish committee (Mr W. J. McKillop), said at last evening's meeting of the council, when he asked that the matter be taken up with the appropriate authority. The secretary (Mr H. B. Barker), said that until there was a firm proposal the society could not lodge objection. More and more applications were being made daily to take water from the rivers and streams with serious consequences to the fish and waterfowl
Mr G. Mugford said the time had come when the society should have a representative on the North Canterbury Catchment Board The president (Mr N. 1 Voyce), said that the matter was bigger than that of pollution, and that in itself was a big enough problem.
A subcommittee of tliei chairman of committees, Mr, W. J. McKillop (fish), Mr G.j Mugford (game), Mr P. C.| Dawson (pollution), two coopted members, Messrs F. J I Gorton and T D. Anderson,; and the president, Mr Voyce,! was formed to investigate the matter.
