“Transistor”
Sir,—The term “transistor” is an international, coined word with a precise meaning, and its spelling varies little from country to country. Thus: toranzisutaa (Japanese!, transistor (English, French, German and, approximately, Russian). It does not mean “a radio” any more than the term “valve” does. Its misuse in the news columns today (“transistors as reward”) is to be deplored. There is no other single word which means the same thing, and its misuse can lead to confusion.—Yours, etc.. PAUL MALING. February 9, 1970.
