Fine Sprinter Retired (N Z Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. Vain, the champion three-1 {year-old sprinter, has been retired from racing. He will spend! his first season at stud next; September at the historic New South Wales Widden Stud. His owners, the Johnson ' brothers, selected Widden Stud after visiting properties in the Widden Valley last Thursday and the champion, the most exciting stud prospect in years, will be mated with 40 mares next spring. One of the mares he will be (mated with is Gaelic Spirit. ' Sydney’s top three-year-old filly which, last season, was third ; to the Melbourne champion in ; the Golden Slipper Stakes and second to him in the Champagne Stakes. Vain’s service fee has been set at $2500, a first-season record for an Australian-bred stallion. The previous highest were Tulloch's first season service fee of 500 guineas in 1961, and Todman’s fee of 400 guineas in his first season, in 1960. Todman will also stand at Widden during the coming season. Vain (Wilkes —Elated* will go to the stud after having only 14 starts, for 12 wins and two seconds. He won $145,485 in stakes.
