Thought Horse Broke Down
J. R. Dowling, the rider of [Red Siren, in the Provincial (Handicap at Riccarton yesterday, told the stipendiary stewards after the race that ■ his mount faltered shortly be)fore entering the home ■ straight. Although Red Siren ran up to the leaders at the furlong, Dowling said he had been unlable to ride the horse out ! fully over the final stages as he felt the horse had broken down. Red Siren was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon immediately on returning to the birdcage but nothing [could be found seriously amiss.
