The education of country children was often hindered by a lack of accommodation in cities and large centres, Mrs A. B. Cameron, of the Hurunui branch said at the W.D.F.F. conference. Mrs Cameron was speaking to a remit, “That the Minister for Education be urged to erect hostels in large cities or centres for boys and girls from the country qualifying for boarding allowance and secondary bursaries from which they can attend the school of their choice to take academic or technical subjects.” Many country families had found it necessary to move to the city when their children reached secondary school age and this was detrimental to them and to their farming communities, Mrs Weir said.
