Dairy Marketing Change Sought

A recommendation that individual exporting concerns must he allowed to work in conjunction with the Dairy Board to obtain new markets for New Zealand dairy produce was approved last evening by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce.

Presented by the chamber vice-president (Mr M. L. Newman), the report said that the majority of chambers of commerce favoured the present marketing system whereby the board sells through its (agents in selected areas. I “The success of the Dairy! ; Board in its marketing arrangements is attributed to that status of the board, which has enabled it to deal with the governments of con- ! sumer countries at high level. This represents a distinct advantage over the private trader,” says the report. I Mr Newman then compared the presentation of Danish and other butter, wrapped in .(silver and gold foil, and said ’ that New Zealand butter and ‘ cheese was not sough* after by the individual overseas ' consumer because its packaging was not attractive. “This obviously is a sphere ■’ in which private enterprise ‘ may be given the opportunity ' to co-operate with the Dairy 1 Board in the marketing of ’ the country’s dairy produce. ; If this is so, then a stately ment of this change of policy • should be asked for in order that businessmen may work , within it,” said Mr Newman. “The survey brings to light ;) the need for a less rigid ;; policy by the Dairy Board in i| spite of its successful mar--1 keting system. My commit- ' tee, bearing in mind the

world surplus of dairy produce, considers it vital that no opportunties should be lost to obtain new markets for our dairy produce, and accordingly individual exporting concerns must be allowed to work in conjunction with (the Dairy Board to this end,” (said Mr Newman.
