Waitangi Day
Sir, —I hope that the recent remarks made by a Paparua County Council member will not be taken seriously by the public of Christchurch in regard to a proposal that Show Day be replaced by Waitangi Day as a public holiday for Canterbury. Show Day is traditional to Christchurch, and to the majority of farming people and Christchurch residents is of far more significance than Waitangi Day. It is also an integral part of Cup Week which draws many visitors to
Christchurch from all over New Zealand for the show and races. The events of Waitangi and the Treaty not yet ratified mean very little to Christchurch people in comparison to the events of December 16, 1850, from which our anniversary day now transferred to Show Day is remembered. A holiday so soon after Christmas and so near to Easter is also not desired.—Yours, etc., J. D. WRIGHT. February 3, 1970.
