Local Tax On Petrol

Sir, —Neither a tax on petrol nor “Motorist’s” suggestion that a 1c tax be placed on all newspapers sold in New Zealand is the answer. Let us kill two birds with one stone by placing a heavy tax on all advertising. Sufficient money would be available to meet a large proportion of local body requirements, and at the same time release thousands of men needed for productive work. Even newspapers run a poor second to the amount of printed matter put out every week to say nothing of television and radio advertising. We at least read our daily paper before it reaches the dust bin. Properly organised, millions would be saved every year. A labour force, its ranks swollen by some thousands of extra men would send up production and with less advertising real competition would enter the market, thus reducing prices to the consumer and lessening the burden of taxes.— Yours, etc., J. GLEN, /February 3, 1970.
