Highest Marks Awarded To Ryan Street

“The tidiest street I have seen,” was how Mr E. J. Holm, co-ordinator of the Christchurch Beautifying Society’s best street competition, described Ryan Street, Woolston, the winner of this year’s premier award. “The marks given to Ryan Street are the highest awarded. Everything about the street is magnificent—the lawns are neatly mowed, the edgings straight and the flowers colourfuL This is not a street of rich people and so it is a amazing effort,” Mr Holm said.

The general standard of other streets was also high. About 90 streets were judged, and most were very tidy. “People who had not mowed their lawns for 20 years seem to have mowed them this year,” he said. “It was a grand community effort.” Each street was judged by representatives of the local county.
