CAMPING TOURS

Interest In U.K. Growing

More than 50 per cent of young persons from Australia and New Zealand visiting Britain now toured Europe in organised camping tours, said Mr M. G. Hannah in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Hannah, aged 32, left Christchurch eight years ago. He is the managing-director of Atrek Travel, Ltd, London. His company last year organised camping tours for 300 young persons, mostly girls, from Australia and New Zealand, through 14 European countries.

He said that the camping tours, of up to 14 persons travelling by mini-bus, with driver-guide, was mid-way between private camping and conducted tours. “The small-party camping tour has caught on tremendously in the last two years and there are 45 companies in Britain competing in this field,” he said. “The security afforded by travelling in a small group, but not being conducted, is the biggest factor in the growth of this type of tour. The fact that it is very cheap is also a big attraction." Mr Hannah said that a nineweek tour of 14 countries cost $336, and a five-week tour of Morocco (including the Sahara region) and Spain, $229. He has been visiting his mother, Mrs D. Hannah, and will return to Britain next week.
