Prospective Teachers Exceed Vacancies

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 30. Auckland Teachers’ College has received 90 more applications from suitable prospec* tive students than it can accept this year.

“I’m astonished,” said the principal (Mr D. K. McGhie) today. “It’s unique In my experience. It seems that many more people leaving school are wanting to become teachers.” The college, which will reopen on Monday, was given a quota of 325 out of the national 1970 intake of 2400 decided by the Government Mr McGhie said the quota was similar to that of previous years, but in the past the college usually just filled its quota without having to put acceptable applicants on a waiting list The college roll would rise from about 660 to nearly 1000 this year because it would have the full three-year training course for the first time, he said. The staffing officer of the

Auckland Education Board (Mr B. Cashmore) said that training colleges throughout New Zealand seemed to be receiving more applications this year.

“As far as I know, every teachers’ college in New Zealand has a waiting list,” he said.

“We have had telegrams from education boards in other parts of the country wanting to know if we could admit students from their areas.”
