Suez Policy Opposed

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) * LONDON, Jan. 30. Mr Edward Heath, the Conservative Leader of the Opposition explained in a newspaper article today why his party is determined to retain a British military presence in the Far East

Writing in the “Daily Mail,” Mr Heath said: “The wealth and prosperity of the East depend entirely on stability, on freedom from external threat and without that stability British interests in the area would very quickly disappear.

“Alleged savings in defence costs at the price of risking the standard of living and jobs of all the British people are no savings at all. That is no sort of bargain, and the next Conservative Government will have nothing to do with it.” The Conservatives have said if they Win the next General Election, expected some time this year, they will commit British troops to a joint defence force, with Australia New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia.
