Discipline In Russian Schools

Sir, —“Fair Parent’s” comment on what I said about discipline in Russian school arises from limitations of reportingspace. When I talked to the Boys’ Brigade I offered comment and criticism of their disciplinary methods. 1 also remarked on the limitations of my experience while there. Nevertheless, Russian school discipline is first, rate.

And I maintain they are right in regarding a-child’s school behaviour as substantially the parent’s responsibility. It is scandalous that teachers should have to spend considerable amounts of their time and energ. continually wrestling with ill brought up children. In a certain sense the whole Russian population is, as "Fair Parent” says of the children, “emotionally stifled.” 1 was struck though, as I said in my talk, by the immense contrast between the open, friendly, lively, and spontaneous behaviour of both children and adults, and the obviously domineering and dictatorial State mechanism. The human spirit has a gift for inner freedom.—Yours, etc. M. A. BULL. January 30, 1970.
