Fences Across Roads

Sir,—l have always understood that roads exist for the unobstructed use of the public except on certain occasions and subject to statutory safeguards. This matter has been referred by me to the Ashley County Council previously and although some action was taken it would appear to be of little avail. In particular I refer to Amesbury Road at Saltwater Creek. Because of the existence of a fence and stake* adjacent to the Main North Road entrance to Amesbury Road, no motorist is able to travel down this road in exercise of his legal rights. I fear also that unless kept open to the publie Amesbury Road will assume some of the character of the surrounding wilderness. Is any action available to the public to fore effective action being taken to have this road freed from fences across it?— Yours, etc., SALTY. January 25, 1970. [Mr R. F. James of Benmore Station on whose property the road is situated, said that the road was an important access way to Porters Pass for stock and was used by several properties in the area. Improvements had recently been made to the road so that the stock might pass along it] [The Ashley County Clerk (Mr A. J. McKendry) replies: "The matter raised will be investigated.”]
