Captain Cook’s Cannon

Sir,—Mr Seath, the Minister of Internal Affairs, has announced that New Zealand is to be presented with one of six of Captain Cook’s cannons jettisoned on the Great Barrier Reef from the Endeavour in 1770. Is it possible before a final resting place has been determined, to arrange for the cannon to circulate centres following the Bicentenary exhibition of Polynesian artifacts?—Yours, etc., NO SORT OF IRON.

January 15, 1970. [The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) replies: “As yet details have not been received from Australia about the state of the cannon or what steps may be required to prevent further deterioration in its condition after 200 years in the sea. No decision can be made about the future of the cannon until this is to hand but your correspondent’s suggestion is a good one and it will be carefully considered before a decision is reached.”]
